Teacher Education in English
This master programme prepares you to teach English language and literature to the higher classes of Dutch higher secondary and tertiary education (HAVO, VWO and HBO in Dutch). Instead of spending a great deal of time in-class, you will be spending most of your time in front of it, teaching teens and young adults at the school where you work. The combination of one day a week at HU, and the rest of the week actually teaching makes for an ideal combination.

"Combining paid work as a teacher (which is also my internship) 3 days a week while doing this Master’s course, I get to put into practice the skills that I’m learning about. "
Melissa Donders (47)1st year student
I chose to enrol in the Master Teacher Education (in English) course straight after I had completed my Bachelor degree at HU. For me it was a logical step to help further my career (which it has) and open up more options in the field of education. Combining paid work as a teacher (which is also my internship) 3 days a week while doing this Master’s course, I get to put into practice the skills that I’m learning about.
At first, the course seemed similar to the Bachelor degree but I soon realised there is a lot more depth to it as it teaches more of the science of education alongside the methodology and has given me, as a teacher, more skills and knowledge to use. The course has a large focus on English literature, how to teach it, how to test it and how to understand it, which has provided me with great tools to use in the classroom. The Literature courses give you that opportunity to really think about what you are reading and help you bring that into your lessons.
Tip: Start reading the books over the summer holidays.
