"Thanks to the experience I gained during the Master of Engineering, I can confidently tackle future challenges."

After completing my Nautical & Marine Engineering education, I started working as a marine engineer at Holland America Line. Later on, I worked for different companies in various roles including reliability engineer, regional reliability and maintenance lead, and asset engineer. In those positions I often encountered management challenges, so I had been wanting to start the Master of Engineering for a long time. In my current role as Team Lead Engineering at LyondellBasell, I deal with strategic and tactical issues related to asset and maintenance management. How to best design certain work processes? And how to ensure continuous improvement in asset management? The knowledge I gained through the master’s classes and projects is very valuable in answering these types of questions.
Within the master's programme, we worked on various projects in small groups. One of the most enjoyable projects for me was the collaboration with GVB in Amsterdam. We had conversations with the asset manager and conducted research on the lifespan of sensors and PLCs in metros. The manufacturer claimed that they would be taken out of production and needed to be replaced. However, after a reliability calculation, it was determined that replacement was not necessary thanks to the high reliability and long lifespan of the sensors and PLCs. A conclusion that saved GVB a lot of money. My fellow students had different professional backgrounds, which allowed us to learn a lot from each other. They provided me with insights from other industries that I can now put into practice.
Thanks to the experience I gained during the Master of Engineering, I can confidently tackle future challenges.

Industrialisation is a challenge in the construction sector. It is often said that each building is unique and therefore not suitable for standardisation and modularisation. It is essential to reduce failure costs and simplify the reuse of knowledge. Modular products offer both benefits.
I have chosen the Master of Engineering because this programme perfectly aligns with the increasingly integrated nature of the construction and engineering sector and because of the collaboration with students in Maintenance and Asset Management.
For my master's thesis, I came up with a modular solution for suspended ceilings in offices. My solution aligns with the aesthetic preferences of the consulted architects and meets the technical requirements. The reduction in failure costs is converted into improved product quality.
The curriculum of the Master of Engineering enabled me to develop a valuable and applicable solution for BAM Bouw en Techniek. I am proud to have graduated with honours, and to have received the 2018 Tim Zaal Thesis Award for my thesis.

Over 4 years ago, I completed my bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. But since then, I have been contemplating the next step in my career. Currently, I work as a maintenance engineer at The Heineken Company, where I focus on optimising and refining packaging lines. Both in my job and in our industry, I noticed that there is an increasing demand for more extensive skills. Companies are seeking engineers who possess not only technical knowledge but also strategic skills in asset management. I decided it was time to take up a part-time education, and I quickly came across the Master of Engineering. There are not many other institutions that offer a similar programme. Through this master's programme, I have already made significant progress in asset management and have worked on challenging projects with fellow students. For example, in semester 3, I investigated how we can package beer more efficiently for part of the portfolio at The Heineken Company.
Besides the applicable knowledge I gained about asset and maintenance management, the master's programme also teached me a lot about myself as a professional. The focus lies not only on theory, but also on the development of hard and soft skills. Which is highly valuable in practice. During the classes, the instructors provide insightful examples and take everyone's input seriously. The perspectives of fellow students from different organisations are interesting as well. They helped me look beyond my own field of expertise. For the future, I look forward to further developing the management and maintenance of assets within the organisation. And I think it would be a great challenge to lead a larger team.
The Master of Engineering has prepared me for the next step in my career and to start working in a more strategic manner.
