"The programme allows for a lot of practical experience, you are assigned to an internship already in your first year and get to observe real-life lessons."
Aleksandra Kostrzewa (20)Student Teacher Education in English and French (double degree)
I am currently enrolled in the Teacher Education in English and French double degree programme. I chose this programme because I have a passion for languages and teaching. The regular programme is fairly easy to follow, therefore I wanted to take on a bigger workload and decided to sign up for the double degree. I find that the programme suits me well, and the practical experience is valuable for developing my teaching skills.
What I found to be a pleasant surprise was the number of people assigned to help students out with technical issues and support them as they progress with their studies. There are 2 people who are specifically assigned to each class whose role is to support them and provide guidance, but apart from that, each teacher is very helpful with any arising issues. Additionally, the programme allows for a lot of practical experience, you are assigned to an internship already in your first year and get to observe real-life lessons.
After graduation, I plan on pursuing a career in teaching with the prospect of becoming a school director. On the back burner I am keeping the idea of being a journalist. I am thinking of doing my minor and master’s in that field to feel it out. I don’t want to limit myself to just one career choice, but it’s good to have a safety net – especially when you are rather passionate about that safety net.
"Teaching becomes second nature very soon!"
Robbert Couwenberg (23)First year student
"Teaching seems a little daunting at first, but you get used to it very quickly because you practice a lot with teaching models, and you give presentations. For this programme, you need to be good at French and enjoy studying a language. You must also love teaching children. In your first year, you take a trip to the French city of Rouen. You stay with a host family and undertake excursions with your study mates during the day. I highly recommend it!"
"At HU, the teachers are highly respectful, interested, competent, experienced, modest and ready to help whenever and wherever you need them."
Hajar Labhar (19)First year student
Studying in the Netherlands means being a part of an international and multicultural environment, where the tolerance, the respect and open-mindedness are the most valuable characteristics. As an international student, my biggest fear before coming to the Netherlands was the incapability of communicating with the Dutch community, also not finding enough choices within the degrees totally taught in English. Nevertheless, it was a relief to know that the Netherlands has a wide range of internationally recognized degrees in English. Moreover, the level of English speaking locals is very high, especially in the big cities such as Utrecht, which makes life very convenient and pleasant for all the international students.
The programme Teacher Education in French is divided into two parts: the French part related to the grammar, the literature and the communication, and the English part which is mainly about the pedagogics, the teaching methods and professional development. This mix of languages adds to the innovative methods of teaching that made this programme very suitable for me. One of the most important points that I would like to highlight are the teachers. At HU, the teachers are highly respectful, interested, competent, experienced, modest and ready to help whenever and wherever you need them.
