Insurance
Every person living in the Netherlands is required by law to have medical insurance. Taking out personal liability insurance is strongly recommended. And there are additional insurances you may want to take out. Check Study in Holland's insurance checklist for further information.
Health insurance
There are different options, depending where you are from. HU offers a collective health insurance policy in case you need to take one out.
If you have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), your home country's insurance will cover your medical expenses in the Netherlands under the same conditions and at the same cost as people insured here.
If you wish to do paid work or an internship in the Netherlands, you are required to take out Dutch public health insurance (see details below).
You are required by Dutch law to have sufficient health insurance cover during your stay in the Netherlands. Insufficient, incorrect or no insurance can result in heavy fines or mounting medical expenses. It is vital you arrange your health insurance before arriving in the Netherlands. At the time of confirming the issue of your Dutch visa and residence permit HU International Office will send details on how you can arrange your Dutch student health insurance.
HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht offers a collective Dutch public health insurance policy in association with insurer Zilveren Kruis Achmea. It is possible to receive a promotional contract code from HU after you have been fully enrolled into the programme of your choice.

If you cause damage to another person or their property, this could lead to spiralling costs. Therefore, all people living in the Netherlands are strongly advised to take out liability insurance. We advise you arrange your liability insurance before you arrive in The Netherlands by comparing policies and purchasing the cover that suits you best.
