If you are enrolled at HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, you need to pay a tuition fee. Even if you are doing an internship of completing the last few assignments of your degree.

Please note

No rights can be derived from the information on this page.

In the Netherlands, there are two types of tuition fees: the statutory tuition fee, set annually by the Dutch government, and the institutional tuition fee, set annually by the universities individually. The institutional tuition fee is higher and only applies to students who don't meet the criteria for the statutory tuition fee.

Curious about which fee applies to you?

Would you like to start a study programme and do you not yet know which fee applies to you? Then you can use the tuition fee calculator. This will show you the amount of your tuition fees for the 2024-2025 academic year.

The statutory tuition fee

You are eligible for the statutory tuition fee if you meet the following criteria:

  • You are a national from a country belonging to the European Economic Area; this includes all EU countries, Iceland, Lichtenstein, and Norway.
  • You are a national from Switzerland or Suriname.

Your nationality is not included above, but:

  • UAF pays your tuition, or;
  • You have a residence permit for a purpose other than study that entitles you to government-backed student finance.

You haven't already completed a bachelor's degree in the Netherlands before starting your bachelor's programme at the HU.

The same rule applies to both master's and Associate degree programmes: you haven't completed a degree on the same level in the Netherlands before starting your programme at the HU.

You have already completed a (associate, bachelor's or master's) degree in the Netherlands that is not in healthcare or education. And now you embark on a programme in either healthcare or education. Check whether your programme meets this condition via DUO CROHO (in Dutch only) or enquire with the institute you plan to study with.

Will 2023-2024 be your first year as a student in Dutch higher education and have you applied to a Bachelor’s degree or an Associate Degree? Then the tuition fee will be halved. This means that your tuition fee will be € 1,157. The same goes for second-year students in a teacher training programme. The academic year 2023-2024 will be the last year that this halving of tuition fees will take place. You can find more information about the halving of tuition fees and whether you are eligible on the website of the Dutch government.

In 2024-2025, the halving of the tuition fee is only applicable to second year students of teacher training programmes. In order to be eligible, you have had to be registered as a first year student at a teacher training programme on 1 September 2023. You can find more information about the halving of tuition fees and whether you are eligible on the website of the Dutch government.

Paying your tuition

You need to confirm you are going to pay your tuition in Studielink.

To pay by direct debit you must fill in the IBAN of the person paying your tuition (e.g. you or a parent) and confirm your method of payment. Please note, when using a foreign bank account please follow the instructions in the paragraph below). You will then receive an email from us with an activation code. The account holder uses this to authorise payment using their DigiD.

You can pay the entire amount at once or spread it over ten months:

  • Direct debit in one instalment:
We debit your account with your tuition fee in one transaction. The direct debit takes place around the 25th day of your starting month.
  • Direct debit in equal instalments:
We debit your account around the 25th of each month from September up until, and including, June. When you pay in instalments, an extra € 24 administration fee is charged at the time of the first transfer.

Payment via a foreign bank account or by your employer

If you are going to pay the tuition from a bank outside of SEPA (the Single Euro Payments Area), or if your employer or organisation is going to pay your tuition, it is not possible to pay by direct debit (as stated above).

Instead, choose the following options in Studielink:

  • Select 'Me' after Who is paying the tuition fees?
  • Select 'Other payment method' as your payment method.

You will receive an email with instructions on how to arrange the payment of your tuition fees at HU. If you follow all the steps, the person or organisation that is paying your tuition fees will receive an invoice in the first month of your study programme. The invoice has to be paid within 30 days.

How do I change my payment details?

There are several ways to change your payment details. It depends on which details you want to change and how you arranged the payment in the first place. See below how you can change your details.

  • Changing payment details in Studielink
Have you not yet completed and confirmed your payment details in Studielink? Just change your payment details in Studielink yourself. Have you entered your details less than 24 hours ago? Please wait until 24 hours have passed before you fill in your details again.
  • Do you want to change the account number we use to debit your tuition fees? You can change this yourself in Studielink, too.
  • Switching to single payment
Do you wish to pay your tuition fees in one go after all? You can transfer the remaining amount yourself, but only after the first payment withdrawal has taken place in September. Please note: to calculate your remaining amount, use the following calculation: total tuition fee amount (in Studielink) + € 24 administration costs - the instalments already paid = the remaining amount to be transferred. Make your transfer to Stichting Hogeschool Utrecht, IBAN: NL77ABNA0256732760, BIC code (or SWIFT code): ABNANL2A. Always state your student number with this payment.
  • If in doubt about the remaining amount, contact the Financial Helpdesk: +3188-4815577 or collegegelden@hu.nl.
  • Switching to payment in instalments
Would you rather pay in instalments instead of a single payment? If you started your programme in September, you have until 31 December to switch using the change form below.
  • Payment via employer or organisation
Do you want to change the employer or organisation who pays for you during the academic year? This is only possible if the full amount for this academic year has not yet been paid. Firstly, contact the Financial Helpdesk to find out if it's still possible: +3188-4815577 or collegegelden@hu.nl. If so, you can fill in the change form below.
  • Do you want to pay the tuition fees yourself instead of your employer of organisation? If you started your programme in September, you have until 15 December to switch using the payment change form below.
  • Will somebody else pay your tuition fees and therefore you no longer want to pay your tuition fees yourself? This is not possible after the start of the study programme. Try to make your own arrangement with your employer or organisation.
  • Do you want to change other payment details, or do you want to change the details of the person who pays the tuition fees for you? You can do so by using the payment change form below.
  • Download the Change Payment form
Send the change payment form in the first week of the month to stip@hu.nl. This way, the change can still be processed in the same month. If you send it later, the change may not be processed until the following month. If you change your payment method from paying in one instalment to paying in equal instalments, you may still be in debt when you disenrol mid-term. If so, an additional charge will follow.

If you have obtained a bachelor's or master's degree after 1 August 1991 and you want to enrol in a second degree programme, you'd normally have to pay the institutional tuition fee according to the Dutch Law on Higher Education and Scientific Research art. 7.46 (in Dutch: WHW art. 7.46).

However, there are a few exceptions:

  • When you start a second programme while still enrolled in your first programme. You must remain continuously enrolled for the second programme thereafter.
  • When you start a second programme in healthcare or education and your first programme was not in these areas of study.

If one of these exceptions applies to you, your institutional tuition fee will be lowered to match the current statutory tuition fee. Your tuition fee will therefore be the same as the statutory tuition fee.

Please note: It does take a while for a degree to be registered with DUO and Studielink. This means that HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht may at first charge you the statutory tuition fee, while you are required to pay the institutional tuition fee. If this is the case, you are liable for the difference in fees once your first degree is registered with us. If you are unsure whether we have the right details for you, please contact stip@hu.nl.

Exemption from tuition fees

In the following cases, you may qualify for exemption:

Are you studying at HU and are you going to follow a programme or minor at another educational institution? If so, you may be entitled to an exemption from (part of) you tuition fees  at the other institution, as long as you are eligible for the statutory tuition fee at both institutions.

What do you have to do?

  1. Provide the HU with your payment details in Studielink. You can only do this from mid-June onwards.
  2. Make sure you have arranged all other aspects of your HU enrolment (HU Enrolment Checklist in myHU is green).
  3. Apply in Studielink for the programme or minor at the other educational institution.
  4. Because you must also inform the other educational institution in Studielink as to how you will be paying their tuition fees, select payment via Proof of Paid Tuition Fees (BBC)* in Studielink. The HU will then send the BBC to the other educational institution on your behalf, which will grant you a tuition fee exemption (or part thereof).

Please note: Make sure you complete your enrolment at the HU first. If you are not fully enrolled with HU, we can't send a BBC to the other educational institution and you will not be able to obtain a tuition fee waiver.

Tuition fees are not debited until the month in which your studies start.

* Can’t see the payment method 'Proof of paid tuition fees' in Studielink?
Please check first whether your enrolment at HU is complete. Is this the case? It may be that the other educational institution is not yet able to exchange the BBC via Studielink. Please send an email to stip@hu.nl. Please state for which educational institution and for which academic year you need the BBC. The HU will then send the BBC directly to your other educational institution. The HU will let you know when your BBC has been sent.

Are you studying at another educational institution and are you about to follow a (minor) programme at HU? You may be entitled to an exemption from (part of) your tuition fees at HU, as long as you are eligible for the statutory tuition fee at both institutions.

What do you have to do?

  1. Ensure that your enrolment with the other educational institution is complete.
  2. Apply in Studielink for the programme or minor at HU.
  3. Because you must also state in Studielink how you will pay your tuition fees at HU, you should indicate that you’ll pay via a Proof of Paid Tuition Fees (BBC) by clicking the button Apply for proof of paid tuition fees.* Your other educational institution will then send the BBC to HU on your behalf, which will grant you a tuition fee exemption (or part thereof).

Please note: Make sure you complete your enrolment with your primary educational institution first. Without full enrolment at the other educational institution, they can't send a BBC to the HU and you will therefore not be able to apply for a tuition fee exemption.

* Important: your home institution may not yet be able to exchange the BBC digitally via Studielink
If this is the case, you will receive a notification immediately after clicking the button Apply for proof of paid tuition fees. You are then responsible for contacting your home institution and have them sent your BBC to the HU.

What you need to do in case of arrears

We may be unable to transfer your tuition fee from your account using Direct Debit. For instance if you don't have enough money in your account or because your application process was completed late. In these cases, HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht has no way to reattempt the transfer.

Within two weeks of a missed payment, you'll receive an email request for payment of arrears containing an iDEAL payment link. You can use this link for swift payment of your outstanding funds. If you cannot use iDEAL, you may transfer the money directly to: Stichting Hogeschool Utrecht, IBAN: NL77 ABNA 0256 7327 60, BIC/SWIFT: ABNA NL2A. Don't forget to put your Student-ID in the subject field.

Do you have questions about your outstanding payments? Please contact our Financial Helpdesk on +31 88 481 5577, available on working days between 8.30-12am and 1-3pm. Or send an email to collegegelden@hu.nl.

You are at all times responsible for prompt payment of your tuition, even if it is financed by a parent or employer. If you fail to pay outstanding fees and ignore our reminders, HU will deregister you from your programme in accordance with the Dutch Law on Higher Education and Scientific Research art. 7.42 paragraph 2 (in Dutch: WHW art. 7.42-2).

From that moment onwards you are no longer entitled to education or HU's other services, nor government-backed student finance ("Stufi") or your Student Travel Product. You need to cancel these yourself via DUO: Stopping your studies. Do this immediately to avoid incurring further costs.

Re-entrance to your programme

If you want to re-enter your programme after deregistration, you need to do the following:

  • Settle your payment arrears

Syncasso has taken over the settlement of your payment arrears from HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht. They will tell you how to pay. You can also contact them directly via +3188 844 42 22 or via email.
  • Apply via Studielink

As soon as you have settled your payment arrears, you can submit an (interim) enrolment request via Studielink.
  • Wait for the assessment

You will not be automatically accepted to join your degree programme in the interim. After your application via Studielink, HU will assess your enrolment request. If we need more information, we will contact you at the e-mail address you provided in Studielink. Make sure this is not your HU student e-mail address, but your private e-mail address.

If you disagree with our decision to disenrol you, you can appeal with the HU Student Legal Protection Desk within six weeks of our decision. On the Rights and obligations page you can read more about the procedure.

Please note: You can appeal in English. However, the decision that follows can be in Dutch.

Financial support for students

The Dutch government provides a number of grants and loans through its DUO agency. Read more about this on our Finances and Scholarships page.

If you aren't eligible for those, you can apply for the 'lifelong learning credit' to pay for your tuition fees or course fees. The lifelong learning credit is a loan, and you need to meet certain conditions to apply.

On our Finances and Scholarships page you find an overview of available scholarships for international students.

There is also a number of scholarships and grants available for (future) teachers. This information is currently only available in Dutch.
