We are enhancing ‘the interspace’ in our HU community

We live in a society with many different opinions and traditions. We also see these differences in our HU community. HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht (the HU) aims to be a place where everyone can feel safe and express themselves freely. It is not just about the physical space where people meet, share ideas, and work together, but also about how students, employees, and partners communicate with each other and achieve things together. In this non-physical space, we learn to deal with differences, and we do not have to be afraid of making mistakes. We call this place ‘the interspace’.

Almost everything that happens in society is also experienced within our HU community. Whether they are great or challenging events. ‘This is where everything comes together’  our daily reality (This is the literal translation of the HU-pay-off in Dutch: ‘Hier komt alles samen’). Dealing with these events can go hand in hand with social and cultural tensions and polarisation.

Sometimes, we may unintentionally hurt each other with our opinions. This is unavoidable; you are allowed to disagree, discuss, and debate within the HU community, with respect and decency. Always within the limits of the law, in line with the democratic constitutional state, and the core values of the HU. This requires qualities such as showing courage, seeking connection, being curious, and listening to others.

We are committed to equal opportunities and to diversity and inclusion, which means that different perspectives, experiences, and beliefs coexist. Regardless of your background, beliefs, religion, sexual orientation, gender, talent, characteristics, or limitations. Experiencing the complexity of life together offers an opportunity to connect and learn to deal with different views and traditions in society.

The space in-between is also an important part of the HU's educational and formative mission as a public knowledge institute. We want our employees and students to learn how to handle stressful situations during their work, study programmes, research, and practical assignments.

In short, the space in-between is important because it provides room for interaction, collaboration, and the sharing of knowledge and experiences. This contributes to the personal and social development of everyone involved with the HU.

At the heart of our message to everyone is: do not forget that behind every position, every opinion, every vision, and every conviction, there is a human being. People with diverse life experiences, dreams and ambitions, talents and pitfalls, humour and unique personalities. In conversations, we try to put ourselves in the other person's shoes. Together, we form a bridge when a gap threatens to develop. This is a valuable asset that we want to protect.
