Thóra B. Hafsteinsdóttir PhD, MScN, BSc, RN works as senior researcher in the Research group Proactive care for older people living at home. In addition, she is a senior researcher in the Nursing Science department of Julius Centre, UMC Utrecht, as well as Professor of Nursing at the University of Iceland’s Faculty of Nursing.

Hafsteinsdóttir was born in Iceland. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree (BSc) from the University of Iceland in 1984. After graduating, she started her clinical career in the intensive care unit of Landspítali University Hospital. In 1990, she moved to the Netherlands, where she became a Master of Science in Nursing (MScN) in 1994. In 2003, she was conferred a PhD by Utrecht University for her doctoral thesis ‘Neurodevelopmental treatment in the Early Stage of Stroke’.

In 2012, she earned a Good Clinical Practice Certification senior research qualification, and in 2015, a Senior Education qualification. Both qualifications were conferred by Utrecht University’s Faculty of Medicine. Hafsteinsdóttir supervises a variety of research and development projects in the Netherlands and Iceland. These past few years, her research has focussed on leadership in the nursing profession. She has been awarded grants for the development and testing of a number of different leadership programmes.
