Remko van der Lugt

Professor

As Professor of Co-Design since 2007, Remko has been performing research focussing on how to involve people in innovation projects. This research takes the shape of practice-based projects. The emphasis is on how the user can be developed into a ‘seasoned expert’, and how designers’ tools, methods, skills and attitude can be used to accelerate complex innovation projects.

Remko studied Marine Technology at Delft University of Technology. He attended a master’s degree programme in Creative Studies at the International Center for Studies in Creativity in Buffalo, New York: the cradle of the brainstorming technique. In 2001, he was conferred a PhD by Delft University of Technology’s Industrial Design Engineering faculty for his thesis ‘Sketching in design idea generation meetings’.

He has amassed extensive practical experience in the facilitation of creative co-design processes at both commercial (Unilever, Philips, Sara Lee, GITP) and not-for-profit organisations (Dutch Tax and Customs Administration, Rijkswaterstaat, SURFnet, KNVB Professional Football Section). He is also active within Network Applied Design Research (NADR) as a catalyst and project champion for a programme line relating to the emancipation of designing research.
