Nienke Bleijenberg PhD has been Professor of Proactive Eldercare in the Research group Proactive care for older people living at home since 1 May 2019. The Research group focuses on improving the effectiveness and quality of care provided to senior citizens dealing with multiple chronic conditions (also referred to as multimorbidity).

In 2007, Nienke earned a bachelor’s degree in Nursing (HBO-V) in Utrecht. She combined this graduation period with a pre-master’s programme in Nursing Science. In 2009, she was conferred a master’s degree in Nursing Science by Utrecht University. While attending the Nursing and Nursing Science programme, Nienke worked as a district nurse in the city of Utrecht. Her thesis dealt with Nursing students’ knowledge of, and attitudes towards, the elderly.

In 2013, Bleijenberg was conferred a doctorate by Utrecht University for her study ‘Proactive primary care for frail older people’. While working on het PhD, she also rounded off a post-graduate master’s degree programme in Clinical Epidemiology at Utrecht University. Nienke combines her chair at HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht with a position at Julius Centre, UMC Utrecht, where she is currently working on a number of research projects in epidemiology and other fields. From 2015 until early 2018, she worked one day per week as a district nurse.
